Employee Spotlight

Dawn Weatherford, Sales & Design

The Good Earth Family of Companies is pleased to feature Dawn Weatherford in our Employee Spotlight! For the past three years, Dawn has been busy helping with customer service, quality control and overseeing our color program.

Three years ago, Debbie Hopkins, Plantscape operations Manager at Good Earth Plants (and Dawn's mom...) asked Dawn if she was interested in helping design wreaths, swags and Christmas trees for the holiday season.

"The rest is history!" says Dawn.

From making a plain orchid plant look like a high-fashion design piece to creating ribbon masterpieces on the Children's Hospital Christmas tree at Horton Plaza, Dawn's talents can be seen all over San Diego.

"Because we all jump in and help out in every department, I am proud of each and every project from creating orchid arrangements and interiorscapes to living walls and more," she continues.

"We put a lot of thought into everything we do because we care about the individual needs of our clients...it's not just a sale for us. We make every plant project special," says Dawn.

In the future, Dawn is hoping to continue her work with the community and in particular helping out with the Special Olympics.

"They have a booth every year called Pot-A-Plant and it is a great way to get those with special needs involved in horticulture," Dawn continues.

Dawn is looking forward to watching the family of Good Earth Plant Companies grow.

"I look forward to seeing our headquarters grow into a place where the community can enjoy the horticultural experience and learn about plants and the environment," she says.

When Dawn is not taking great care of our valuable clients, she enjoys spending time with her family and being outdoors in nature. When asked for her thoughts on the future, Dawn shared the following quote:

"Our task must be to free ourselves...by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and beauty." ---Albert Einstein

Letter from the President

Jim in Plants Well... I didn't get much of a vacation in this summer but I did drive my son Ted up to UC Davis to start his freshman year, and took a couple of days afterward to head to the coast and come back down a leisurely fashion.

I had a particularly hectic fall travel schedule. I just got back from Boston attending the American Society of Landscape Architects annual conference. I was asked to speak on the "Obstacles to Successful Maintenance of Living Walls". Great topic, large crowd (120+) and my message included that Landscape Architects could be a factor in less than successful living wall maintenance. I was nervous of the potential backlash and found that my fears were unfounded. I was stopped in the trade show multiple times and told what a great presentation it was and that they appreciated my honesty. I'm coming back with many new friends and connections and more than a few good ideas and new products.

Last week I squeezed in the two day "Bioinspiration" conference hosted by the SD Zoo in Balboa Park. I didn't have to travel, but the science about fried my brain. Thank god there was plenty of information on bringing bioinspired products to the market place - which I could more easily track and understand. I particularly liked the talk by Mike Taylor from Steelcase.

The week before that Kerry and I attended the Green Roofs For Healthy Cities "Cities Alive" Conference in San Francisco. This was my seventh year and it proved itself invaluable as ever. New products, new friends, new connections. Unfortunately I had originally planned to stay a couple of extra days (It was my birthday) but I had a speaking gig at Waterwise Growers and needed to get back home early.

Going all the way back to early October, we worked on a project in Seattle with Michele Marquez of Botanical Design. Kevin and I made the trek up to the northwest and were surprised by sunny and warm weather. The indoor living wall project was a great success and proved our ability to work farther away than Los Angeles.

Whew, no wonder I'm exhausted! Next business trip? Ft Lauderdale in January to attend the Tropical Plant Industry Expo and hopefully... a road trip down the keys.

Until next time, please have a great Thanksgiving and holiday season!

Warmest Regards,

Jim Mumford

GreenScaped Buildings Dives into PureFitness Pool Deck Dcor

At the end of a busy summer, the GreenScaped Buildings team created a wonderful living addition to the Downtown San Diego skyline. Located on the rooftop of the Westgate Hotel, PureFitness now sports a wave/water-inspired living wall that overlooks their swimming pool. Members and guests can now enjoy the beauty of the San Diego skyline and a piece of living art while they swim laps or lounge poolside.

Created by the design teams at KTUA Landscape Architects and Hollander Design Group, the project was overseen by GreenScaped Buildings Project Manager Kerry Bauer and presented a few unique challenges.

"Doing this project on a roof deck poses some interesting logistical complications," Kerry says.

"Weight was the first and most critical aspect to overcome. Next, conveying materials to the roof created some interesting challenges (we had to use a tiny freight elevator). As a roof top deck is hotter and windier than what is typical on the ground, we had to consider which plant species would thrive in a microclimate with the additional sun and wind exposure," she continues.

GreenScaped Buildings Installation Manager Kevin Norton and Installer Nilo Cabrera managed every aspect of the installation. The living wall itself is approximately 12 feet tall and 23 feet wide and is home to 1040 plants including grasses and succulents.

The stunning wall is an amazing addition to the 37,000 square foot facility. Members and guests of PureFitness can select from a wide array of workout choices from running on a rubberized surface track to taking a spin class in an outdoor studio.

"Our team at GreenScaped Buildings really stepped up when faced with the challenges of this project," Kerry states.

"We provided last-minute solutions to keep the cost down for our client. I am extremely proud of the GSB team and of the final product at the PureFitness facility," Kerry continues.
